How Does the Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Work?

The Mini Gastric Bypass, is similar to the regular gastric bypass procedure, with the distinctive advantage of requiring only a single connection instead of two connections (anastomoses) to reroute your digestive system.

With this procedure you will lose weight faster because you will eat less and absorb fewer calories.

This type of procedure is ideal for anyone with a 35-60 Body Mass Index (BMI).  And it can also be a great option for patients with Lap BAND or Gastric Sleeve failure.

Patients with diabetes or metabolic syndrome are also good candidates for this procedure.

How is the surgery performed?

The first step, the stomach is stapled with a laparoscopic stapler to form a thin tube (approximately 30 ml to 50 ml). The thin tube functions as the new stomach, smaller in size and is completely separated from the remaining portion of the stomach. The second step involves suturing the stomach to a loop of small intestine in such as a manner that first part of the intestine (duodenum) remains unconnected to the new stomach. In the third step, the remaining part is attached to the new stomach.

The remaining part of the stomach and part of intestine that is bypassed in the surgical procedure are not removed from the body, they are no longer functional and are not used for food digestion. Only the small tube-like part of the stomach is used for flow of food from where it is passed into intestine where normal digestive process is performed in the operational part of intestine.

The advantage of creating a smaller stomach is that it is capable of holding smaller amounts of food, as well as making you fee full and this ultimately leads to losing weight consistently.

dr.-verboonen-in-house-nutritionistDr. Verboonen’s in house nutritionist will provide you with a personalized and comprehensive nutrition plan that will encompass everything you need to ensure that once you have your mini gastric bypass surgery, you continue to lose weight, safely while remaining healthy.

This surgical procedure helps you lose weight in the following three ways:

  1. Due to a modified digestive system, brain signaling to the body is modified. The signals send by the brain initiating the feelings of hunger are reduced.
  2. A smaller stomach size creates the feeling of fullness  earlier and you refrain from consuming a large portion meal.
  3. The amount of calories absorbed from the food in the small intestine is also reduced as a considerable portion of the small intestine in bypassed by the food during its flow from the stomach into the small intestine
