Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery

While a full gastric bypass can help you shed significant weight, not every patient is up for such an intense surgical procedure.

A mini gastric bypass serves as a modified version of this bariatric procedure, offering equally drastic results and less time in surgery

What Makes Mini Gastric Bypass Different?

While similar to a traditional gastric bypass treatment, the mini gastric bypass takes less time to perform and is also simpler, which reduces the chance of complications

With the mini gastric bypass, the stomach is divided into two pouches and the small intestine is rerouted. The smaller stomach restricts the amount of food eaten while rerouting the small intestine reduces the calories absorbed by the body. The procedure allows you to lose weight faster because you will eat less and absorb fewer calories.

The traditional full-bypass method, also called the Roux-en-Y, requires more intestinal rerouting and a longer and more complex bariatric surgery, which increases the risk of complications. In addition, the full-bypass method is not reversible.

The Basics of Mini Gastric Bypass

Listen to a brief explanation of the mini gastric bypass procedure, an alternative to a full gastric bypass. This overview includes information on how the mini gastric bypass promotes weight loss, its benefits, and who is a good candidate for the surgery. We can review candidacy during a visit to our bariatric surgery practice.

"I Am So Happy Now!" Testimonials From a Patient After Visiting Our Tijuana, Mexico, Facility

"I have been struggling with my weight for years and being on my feet makes it worse. I heard about Dr. Verboonen through a friend and decided to do their free consultation. I was very happy they explained each option to me in detail which helped a lot. They said the average person loses about 30 lbs in 10 weeks. Not only was the customer service great, I lost 15 lbs in two weeks without being hungry. Dr. V and his entire staff are friendly and pay close attention to your wants and needs. I am so happy now!" A Faster, Safer Method for Weight Loss Less Invasive Surgery

A major benefit of this weight loss surgery is that you lose more weight with each passing day because you will eat less and absorb fewer calories.

Some patients have reported a 30-pound loss in as little as one month

The effectiveness of this bariatric method relies on combining the benefits of Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, the traditional method, with a less invasive laparoscopic surgery that uses small incisions. The procedure is not as challenging as traditional Roux-en-Y and is associated with fewer complications.

How Is the Surgery Performed? A Simple 2-Step Surgery

Step 1

The first step is to reduce the size of the stomach by about 75 percent. The stomach is made smaller by using a laparoscopic stapler to form a thin tube (approximately 30 ml to 50 ml). This pouch functions as the new stomach and is separated from the remaining stomach.

Step 2

The second step involves attaching the new stomach to the small intestines while bypassing the upper portion of the small intestines. Food will then flow from the smaller tube-like stomach, the pouch, and bypass from two to seven feet of the intestines before resuming the normal digestive process in the remaining part of the intestine.
The remaining part of the stomach and the intestine that is bypassed are not removed, however they are no longer used in the digestive process.

A Mini Gastric Bypass Involves Less Risk Than a Full Gastric Bypass

Unlike the traditional gastric bypass surgery, the mini gastric bypass features less rerouting of the intestinal tract. Compared to full gastric bypass surgery, mini gastric bypass surgery is less invasive and is associated with fewer complications. While a gastric bypass is a safe procedure, patients who come to our Tijuana, Mexico, facility are more at ease knowing there is less risk with this alternative gastric bypass treatment.

Before and after mini gastric bypass where a new stomach is created and connected to the jejunum. The bypassed portion of the stomach has digestive juice flowing to the jejunum while the new stomach has food flowing to the jejunum.

Is the Mini Gastric Bypass Method Safe?

The mini gastric bypass is laparoscopic, which means it is guided by a small video camera that is inserted through small entry points. This is significantly less invasive than a traditional bypass, which uses a large incision.

In addition to the larger incision, the traditional gastric bypass method is also a technically challenging weight loss surgery. It carries a 7 percent complication risk. In contrast, the mini gastric bypass is quicker, technically easier, and the complication rate is just 2.9 percent.

What Happens During the Mini Gastric Bypass?

We use advanced techniques during the mini gastric bypass process to ensure the best results.
